Sam B. Brandenberger, 85, of Middlebury, died at 5:04 pm on Saturday, April 2 [2022] at his residence. He was born on September 6, 1936, in Union City, PA, to Elmer and Elizabeth (Schwartz) Brandenberger. On November 14, 1957, in LaGrange, he married Sara Etta Lambright, she survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife are daughter, Clara (Levi) Yoder of Middlebury; four sons, Samuel Jr. (Nora) Brandenberger, Marion Brandenberger both of Shipshewana, James (Sharon) Brandenberger of Middlebury, Elmer (Rhoda) Brandenberger of LaGrange; daughter-in-law, Naomi Brandenberger of Topeka; 28 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; seven sisters, Effie May Wickey, Margaret Wickey both of Monroe, Leah (Dan) Schwartz of Albany, WI, Salome Miller of LaGrange, Kathryn (Lester) Miller of New Haven, Becky (Emanuel) Wickey of Monroe, Wilma (Melvin) Lengacher of Maysville, KY; three brothers, Jacob (Catherine) Brandenberger of Greentop, MO, Elmer (Sarah) Brandenberger of Flemingsburg, KY, Willie (Mary) Brandenberger of Grabill; sister-in-law, Rebecca Brandenberger of Grabill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Homer Brandenberger; daughter-in-law, Alpha Brandenberger; grandson, Jason Brandenberger, great-grandson, Matthew James Mast; two brothers, Martin and Amos Brandenberger.
Sam was a carpenter and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
Visitation will be after 2:00 pm on Monday, April 4 and all day Tuesday, April 5 at the Leon Wingard residence, 11692 CR 18, Middlebury. Funeral services will be at 9:30 am on Wednesday, April 6 also at the Leon Wingard residence. Services will be conducted by Bishop Melvin R. Miller and the home ministers. Burial will be in East Barren Cemetery, Shipshewana.
Breckbill, Ina Ruth Krabill
April 18, 1929 - September 9, 2022
Ina Ruth (Krabill) Breckbill was born to Mahlon and Mary Ellen (Conrad) Krabill on April 18, 1929, in Louisville, Ohio. She died on September 9, 2022, in Orrville, Ohio, at the age of 93. She will be lovingly remembered by her immediate and extended family and the many, many people who called her “friend”.
Ina Ruth graduated from Louisville High School and attended Goshen College, Goshen, where she was an education major. At Goshen College she met the love of her life, Willis “Bill” Breckbill. They were married on August 14, 1954, at Beech Mennonite Church in Louisville, Ohio. Ina Ruth was an elementary school teacher for several years in Canton, Ohio, New Paris, and Biglerville, Pennsylvania. Bill was a pastor and church leader and Ina Ruth loved her role as an encourager and supporter of his work.
Together they pastored at Bethel Mennonite Church (Biglerville, PA), First Mennonite Church (Canton, OH), as Ohio and Eastern Mennonite Conference Minister (while living in Louisville, OH), Preston Mennonite Church (Cambridge, ON), as Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference Minister (while living in Goshen, IN), and Waterford Mennonite Church (Goshen, IN). They served in interim pastorates at Southside Fellowship (Elkhart, IN), Greenfield Community (Portadown, Northern Ireland), and Central Mennonite Church (Archbold, OH). Ina Ruth didn’t enjoy being in front of people, but was at her best making friends and building relationships one on one. She made friends everywhere she went and found ways to foster and maintain those friendships even after moving away.
Music was a very important part of her life. She loved playing the piano, going to concerts, and listening to her children play and sing music. She often led children’s music in Sunday School and Bible School. Music helped her through hard times and made the good times even better.
People and relationships were at the core of who she was. She cared about people and they knew it. She was a committed mother to David, Bruce, Don and Anne. Her children, and eventually her children’s spouses and their children, were very, very important to her. Family gatherings, especially at Christmas, were highlights of the year for her. She also had many close friends with whom she shared love and laughter and good conversation, always with a plate of cookies she had baked and a cup of coffee. If you were a friend or acquaintance of Ina Ruth, you probably have had one (or many) of her delicious cookies.
In 2020, Ina Ruth moved to OrrVilla Assisted Living in Orrville, Ohio, to be closer to family. There she continued to make friends and play the piano. It was a wonderful place for her to live out her last few years. We are grateful for the excellent care she received at the facility.
Ina Ruth is survived by her children and children-in-law, Anita (David) Breckbill of Lincoln, Nebraska, Bruce and Jill Breckbill of Kidron, Ohio, Don and Carola Breckbill of Stoughton, Wisconsin, Anne Breckbill and Holly Smart of St. Paul, Minnesota. She is also survived by grandchildren Max (Karen), Hannah, Greta, Ben (Laurel), Madlen, Isaiah (Grace), Anna and Elizabeth and great grandchildren, Auden and Ludo. Also surviving are Anne and Abner Hershberger (sister and brother-in-law) and Grace Krabill (sister-in-law). She is preceded in death by Mahlon and Ella Krabill (parents), Willis Breckbill (husband), David Breckbill (son), and Willard Krabill (brother).
Ina Ruth’s ashes will be scattered at Waterford Mennonite Church Memorial Garden in a private ceremony. Visitation with family will be Saturday, October 15, from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at Waterford Mennonite Church, Goshen, with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Goshen College Music Center or MCC (Mennonite Central Committee).
Breneman, Ruth Burkholder
October 29, 1928 - April 6, 2022
Ruth B. Breneman, 93, formerly of Washington Boro, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at Pleasant View Communities. She was the wife of the late Amos W. Breneman, who passed away in 1993. She was born in Clay Township, daughter of the late John H. and Mary Wenger Burkholder. Ruth was a homemaker and contributed much to the family farm for many years. She was a member of Habecker Mennonite Church. In later years, she volunteered at the Columbia Re-Uzit Shop. Ruth enjoyed time with her family and cooking.
She is survived by her five children: J. Earl (Connie) Breneman, Columbia; Karen S. (Paul) Miller, Elizabethtown; James L. (Renee) Breneman, Mountville; Nelson R. (Valerie) Breneman, Washington Boro and Carol A. Breneman, Washington Boro. Eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Two brothers: Paul A. Burkholder, Ephrata and Glenn (Phoebe) Burkholder, Washington Boro. One sister: Jean Zimmerman Alvisi, Stevens. One sister-in-law: Lois Burkholder, Washington Boro. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Janice E. Breneman; infant brother: Irwin W. Burkholder and an infant sister: Doris E. Burkholder. Three brothers: J. Clyde, Ezra W. and Raymond W. Burkholder.
The family would like to thank Melynda Hasselbach for being a wonderful caregiver and friend to their Mom. Also, to everyone at Pleasant View Communities and Hospice for All Seasons, for their compassionate care.

Brenneman, Fannie Bontrager
February 11, 1931 - May 13, 2022
Fannie Brenneman, 91, of Bristol, died peacefully in her sleep at 11:00 pm, on Friday, May 13 at Goshen Hospital. She was born on February 11, 1931, in Kokomo, to Joseph and Sarah (Helmuth) Bontrager. On February 16, 1957, in Kokomo, she married Raymond Jay Brenneman, he died March 1, 2020.
Surviving are three sons, Robert (Marla) Brenneman of Goshen, Rollin (Laura) Brenneman of Union, MI, Ronald Brenneman of Bristol; five grandchildren, Amber (Matt) Bloom, Michael (Lisa) Kauffman, Kyle Brenneman, Jezra (Becky) Brenneman, Brenna (James) Noffsinger; six great-grandchildren, Johnny and Aabby Bell, Ellie and Simon Bloom, Ari and Darcy Brenneman; sister, Alma Bontrager of Tipton.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two grandchildren, Matthew and Malachi Kauffman; seven brothers, Harvey, Al, Ed, John, Dewey, Daniel, and Levi Bontrager; five sisters, Nora Troyer, Edna Sutherland, Mandy Miller, Sylvia Bontrager, Emma Bontrager and an infant sister.
Fannie was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She also was a truck driver delivering RV’s. She was currently attending Bonneville Mennonite Church and was a former member of Clinton Brick Mennonite Church. Fannie enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with her grandkids.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 19 at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street, Middlebury. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, May 20 also at the funeral home. Services will be conducted by Pastor Mariah Martin. Burial will be in Clinton Brick Cemetery, Goshen. Memorials may be given to Bonneyville Mennonite Church.
Brenneman, Phoebe Branner
December 3, 1925 - October 13, 2022
Phoebe Branner Brenneman, 96, a resident of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, formerly of Broadway, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022. A daughter of the late Charles and Josephine Branner, she was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Broadway, Va.
Phoebe graduated from Broadway High School and attended Eastern Mennonite School. She then joined the staff of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in Akron, Pa. She also served with MCC in Washington, D.C. and with a voluntary service unit in Gulfport, Miss. In Akron, she met and later married Deward Brenneman from Kalona, Iowa on Aug. 22, 1953. They lived briefly in Kalona before moving to Broadway, Va., where they spent the rest of their lives prior to going to VMRC in 2005.
Deward and Phoebe both volunteered many hours with Gift and Thrift and Booksavers after retirement. They were both lifetime members of Zion Mennonite Church, where they served in many capacities. They enjoyed biking, camping, and hiking mountain trails and country roads.
She is survived by two sons, Tony and his wife, Becky, of Broadway, Va., and Tim and his wife, Joy, of Tifton, Ga. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Branner of Harrisonburg, Va.; her sister, Francis Rhodes of Harrisonburg, Va.; and a grandson, Will Brenneman of Tifton, Ga. The family also includes eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. In 1979, Zion Mennonite church sponsored a Vietnamese refugee family consisting of five siblings and a cousin. Deward and Phoebe were heavily involved with this to the extent that they are still referred to as “Mom” and ”Dad” by the Troung family.
The family will have a private graveside service at Zion Mennonite Church on Nov. 5, and a memorial service open to the public at 1:30 p.m. There will also be a live link of the memorial service at zmcva.org.

Brubacker, Ida W. Burkholder
September 30, 1943 - September 30, 2022
Ida W. Brubacker, 79, of Carlisle, PA, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2022. She was born September 30, 1943, in Ephrata, PA, to the late Titus and Elizabeth (Weaver) Burkholder.
Ida was a homemaker and member of the Emmanuel Fellowship Church in Edenville, PA.
Ida is survived by her husband, Paul Brubacker of Carlisle; nine children, Ida Ann Brubacker of Carlisle, Ruth Elaine Diller of Carlisle, Mary Susan Weaver of Carlisle, Jay Paul Brubacker of Mechanicsville, MD, John Mark Brubacker of Townville, Rhoda Jane Rohrer of Mechanicsburg, Joanna Fay Boyd of York, James Daniel Brubacker of Dexter, ME, and Jesse Lee Brubacker of Wales, ME; sixty-two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Ida was the oldest of fourteen children and she is survived by twelve siblings. Ida was preceded in death by one grandson, Russell Boyd.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 10:00 AM at the Mountain View Mennonite Church, 720 Burnt House Road, Carlisle, PA 17015 with Bishop Noah Rudolph, Bishop Mark Rock, Minister Keith Sensening and Deacon Lynn Gayman officiating. Mary M. Brubacker, 92, of Mount Pleasant Mills, died at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
She was born Dec. 15, 1929, in Ephrata, a daughter of the late David W. and Mary Stauffer and grew up in Loveville, Md.
On July 25, 1974, she married Rufus S. Brubacker who preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1980.
Surviving are one daughter, Rachel and Paul Auker of Mount Pleasant Mills; four stepchildren, Roy and Karen Brubacker of Mount Pleasant Mills, Karl and Eva Brubacker of Rich Hill, Mo., Dorcas and Timothy Stauffer of Homer City, Pa., and Caroline Brubacker of Mount Pleasant Mills. Also surviving are one sister, Elizabeth and Paul Brubacker of Scottsville, Ky.; two brothers, Norman and Mary Stauffer of Loveville, Md., Levi and Elise Stauffer of Liverpool, Pa., 56 grandchildren and 84 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were four stepdaughters, Frieda Brubacker, Marie Showalter, Grace Stauffer and Rebecca Auker; and siblings, Minnie Stauffer, Luke Stauffer, Lena Brubacker, David M. Stauffer, Eva Brubacker, Daniel Stauffer and John Stauffer; one grandson and four great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at Peaceful Sleeper Shop on Orchard Hill Road, Mount Pleasant Mills. The funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at Stauffer Mennonite Church, Verdilla District.

Rebecca H. Brubacker, 86, of Richland, peacefully went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Myerstown Mennonite Home, Myerstown, PA with family by her side. She was the wife of the late Victor P. Brubacker. Born September 1, 1935, near Brownstown, PA, she was the daughter of the late David M. and Alta Hoover Martin.
A homemaker, Rebecca was a custodian at First National Bank, Fredericksburg, and a volunteer at the Jubilee Shop. She enjoyed plants, bird watching, prayer and reading the Bible, and was a member of Harmony Christian Fellowship.
She is survived by sons, Jesse, husband of Rosanna (Martin), Lebanon; Ray, husband of Michelle (Barham), Vero Beach, FL; David, husband of Karen (Zook), Richland; and daughter Rose, wife of Richard Hoover, Martinsburg; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers, David H. husband of Rhoda Martin of Newmanstown, and Emanuel H. husband of Susan Martin of Millersville; two sisters, Florence wife of Samuel Nolt of East Greenville, and Anna wife of Roy Zeiset of Greencastle; two brothers-in-law, Charles Martin and Marvin Wise. She was preceded in death by a son, Victor E. Brubacker, brothers, Aaron, Norman and Melvin Martin and by sisters, Laura Martin and Miriam Wise.
Her funeral will be held Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 11 AM at Harmony Christian Fellowship, 30 Camp Swatara Road, Myerstown, PA, with Leonard Martin officiating. Daryl Z. Brubaker, 19, of Mount Pleasant Mills, entered into rest Sunday, April 17, 2022, due injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Perry Township, Snyder County.
He was born April 8, 2003, in Thompsontown, a son of Paul M. and Ruth Ellen (Zimmerman) Brubaker of Mount Pleasant Mills.
Surviving in addition to his parents are fours brothers, Lawrence Brubaker of Middleburg, Kenneth Brubaker, Curtis Brubaker, Galen Brubaker, all at home; three sisters, Gloria, Claudine and Lorraine, all at home; and maternal grandmother, Katie B. Zimmerman of Mechaniesville, Md.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Irvin S. Zimmerman of Mechanicsville, Md.; paternal grandparents, Frank S. and Mildred L. Brubaker of Mount Pleasant Mills, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to the viewing from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the family residence, 590 Hoffer Road, Mount Pleasant Mills, where the funeral will be held at 12:15 p.m. Friday, April 22, with further services at Stauffer Old Order Mennonite Church, 67 Troup Valley Road, Mount Pleasant Mills, with the local ministry officiating.

Earl M. Brubaker, age 60, of Shelby, died Monday, February 14, 2022 following an unexpected and apparent heart attack.
Earl was born April 28,1961 in Ephrata, PA to the late Lester G. and Elsie (Martin) Brubaker. He worked in the construction industry and was a member of Clear Creek Mennonite Church in Savannah.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Barbara A. (Richard) Brubaker, whom he wed on August 11, 1984; 10 children: Melodie (Steve) Leid of Wooster, Michelle (Eric) Vikingstad of Sunbury, Craig Brubaker of New Washington, Eric (Marnita) Brubaker of Shiloh, Sherry (Lyle) Martin of Goshen, IN, Elsie (Jamie) Martin of Lakeville, IN, Carolyn (Adrien) Penrod of Creston, Evelyn Brubaker, Scott Brubaker, and Brent Brubaker all of Shelby; 10 grandchildren: Keturah, Trent, Abigail, Ian, Toby, Liz, Lance, Rowan, Scarlett, and Cooper; mother and father-in-law: Jr. and Naomi Richard of Wooster; siblings: Eugene (Mildred) Brubaker, Ervin (Mary Ellen) Brubaker, Mary Ann (Jere) Zimmerman, Ray (Joy) Brubaker, John (Susan) Brubaker, and Linda (Ross) Martin; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Brubaker, Gladys M. Landis
July 18, 1922 - April 30, 2022
Gladys M. Brubaker, 99, of Quarryville, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022 at her home. Gladys was born in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Phares B. and Martha (Groff) Landis. She was the faithful wife of Marlin R. Brubaker who died in 2009. They shared 62 years of marriage.
Gladys graduated from East Lampeter High School in 1941 and worked at Hamilton Watch Factory for several years. She was a member of Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church, where she participated in the Sewing Circle, making many comforter tops for MCC.
She and her husband started Little Britain Ag Supply in 1962. Gladys enjoyed boating and water skiing as well as growing roses. She had the gift of hospitality, hosting meals for family and friends. She spent many winters in Sarasota, where she and her husband were active in the Bahia Vista Community.
Gladys is survived by six children: James R., husband of Glenda (Smoker) of Quarryville; Velma E., wife of Linford Good of Lancaster; Carol J., wife of Larry Burkhart of Quarryville; M. Ray, husband of Phyllis (Craul) of Quarryville; Gayle M., wife of Daniel Hershberger of Quarryville; and Joyce A., wife of Gordon Herr of Linden, WI. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Gladys was preceded in death by two sisters: Arlene Kurtz, and Miriam Eckman and four brothers: Marvin Landis, Carvel Landis, Harold Landis, and Raymond Landis.
A memorial service will take place at Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church, 735 Church Road, Quarryville on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. and also on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. Traditional interment will be private prior to the service in the adjoining cemetery.
Brubaker, Lydia Ann Stauffer
September 19, 1957 - May 7, 2022
Lydia Ann Brubaker, 64, of Port Trevorton entered into rest on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Geisinger Medical Center after a battle with cancer.
She was born on September 19, 1957, in Lancaster County, a daughter of the late David Stauffer and Lydia (Martin) Stauffer. On May 12, 1979, she married John A. Brubaker, who survives.
She was a member of Chapman Old Order Mennonite Church.
Lydia was a homemaker and operated Brubaker Quilts in Port Trevorton for many years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Winona Martin (Floyd) of Mount Pleasant Mills; John Brubaker of Port Trevorton; Showandah Martin (Andy) of Mount Pleasant Mills; Zachary Brubaker (Jessica) of Port Trevorton, 10 grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Ivanor Brubaker, five brothers and nine sisters, Robert Stauffer, Larry Stauffer, Leon Stauffer, Edwin Stauffer, David Stauffer, Edith Martin, Mildred Martin, Nora Burbaker, Gladys Martin, Sylvia Brubaker, Dorothy Brubaker, Edna Auker, Susan Brubacker and Fern Auker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson Stauffer, and three brothers-in-law.

Brubaker, M. Arlene Martin
July 15, 1930 - December 4, 2022
M. Arlene Brubaker, 92, of Mount Joy, passed into eternal life with Jesus on December 4, 2022, peacefully surrounded by loving family. She was the wife of Martin B. Brubaker with whom she celebrated 69 years of marriage in September. Born July 15th 1930, she was youngest daughter of the late Mahlon & Elsie Martin of New Holland.
She is the last of her family of 10 siblings except for 1 sister-in-law, Janet Martin. Preceding her were brothers: Jacob, Leroy, Samuel, Richard & Robert Martin. Sisters: Eva Horst, Dorothy Peters, Viola (Shank) Gochaneur & Ruth Nark.
Surviving are husband Martin, & 4 children: Rachel (Brian George), Dwight (Kim), Doug (Karen), Reba (Rudy Wolgemuth), and 9 grandchildren. She especially enjoyed visits from great-grandchildren who learned at a young age to send their sewing needs to Grandma Arlene.
She was a domestic engineer who supported her husband on the family farm by helping in the barn, picking corn, and driving tractor. Her hands were always busy doing or making something. She was a loving mother, accomplished seamstress, a hard-working preserver of abundant produce from the home garden & marvelous cook. Arlene was gracious, humble, a self-sacrificing blessing to her family. A young boy from Harrisburg, Bill Fink spent 4 summers in their home and to this day raves about her cooking. She was especially known for her shoo-fly cake. She also enjoyed making blue jean braided rugs for her family, friends and the MCC Relief Organization. In the last years, Arlene made 1070 loomed knitted baby hats for Christian Aid Ministries.
In younger years, she was an active member of Mount Joy Mennonite Church. She was a member of their sewing circle, kitchen committee, cradle roll visitation, and volunteered 19 years at Mount Joy Gift and Thrift.
After moving from the family farm, Martin & Arlene resided 18 years at Mount Joy Country Homes prior to moving to Elizabethtown to receive family care. Arlene enjoyed the care she received from numerous people in the last years of her life.

M. Elizabeth Brubaker, age 95, formerly of Christiana, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. She was the wife of the late John A. Brubaker, who passed away on October 27, 2019. Born in Strasburg, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Ruth Hershey Neff. Elizabeth was a member of the Nickel Mine Mennonite Church, where in the past she served as a custodian and was a part of the sewing circle. Over the years she enjoyed quilting, gardening and sewing baby quilts and hot pads for her family.
Surviving are 2 children: Ruth E., wife of Andrew Troyer of Smyrna, TN, John Jr., husband of Barbara Witmer Brubaker of Buhl, ID, 10 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and a brother: Earl, husband of Marion Leaman Neff of Quarryville. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy, late wife of Timothy Gochnauer, and 2 brothers: Lester & Clarence Neff. Brubaker, Orpha M. Apple
August 2, 1925 - March 16, 2022
Orpha M. Brubaker, 96, of Belleville, entered eternal life on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Valley View Retirement Community in Belleville.
She was born Aug. 2, 1925, in West Perry Township, Snyder County, a daughter of the late George and Della (Kauffman) Apple.
On Aug. 11, 1945, Orpha married her sweetheart, Jacob N. Brubaker. They shared more than 55 years of marriage at the time of Jacob's passing on Nov. 24, 2000.
Orpha was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, flowers, reading, visiting friends and family, music and poetry, playing games, and walking. Her passion was cooking and making meals for people, as well as walking for the Life Pregnancy Center.
She was a member of the Richfield Life Ministries Church (formerly Richfield Mennonite Church) where she helped with the meals for funerals. She was also a member of their Christian Women's Club.
Orpha is survived by her children, Robert Brubaker and his wife Sandra of Lancaster, Danny Brubaker and his wife Ruth Ann of Hunlock Creek, Ronald Brubaker and his wife Betty of Selinsgrove, and Bonnie Benjamin of State College; 11 grandchildren, Deron Brubaker, Bradley Brubaker, Nathan Brubaker, Derick Brubaker, Melissa Howard, Jeremy Brubaker, Joel Brubaker, Danny Brubaker, Beth Strange, Jason Brubaker, and Christopher Brubaker; 26 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Dianna Brubaker of Richfield.
She was preceded by her loving husband Jacob; her parents; a son, Orville Brubaker; three brothers, Paul Apple, Glenn Apple, and Melvin Apple; three sisters, Kathryn Lauver, Hazel Graybill, and Dorcas Fenner.
A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Richfield Life Ministries, 167 Church St., Richfield, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. with Orpha's son, Pastor Danny Brubaker officiating.
Interment will be in the Richfield Union Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.

Roy M. Brubaker, 76, of Port Trevorton, entered into rest Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 26, 1946, in East Earl Township, Lancaster County, a son of the late David and Lena (Martin) Brubaker. On Sept. 4, 1965, he married Nora S. Auker, who survives. They shared 57 years of matrimony.
He was a member of the Snyder County Mennonite Conference (Riverview District).
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters and seven sons, Cheryl and Peter Weaver of Port Trevorton, Darvin and Michelle (Horst) Brubaker of New Holland, Lois and John Stauffer of Port Trevorton, Gary Brubaker of Reinholds, Galen Brubaker, Wayne Brubaker, Kevin Brubaker, all of Denver, Carol and Jairus Stauffer of Port Trevorton, David and Sharon (Martin) Brubaker of Denver, Curvin Brubaker of Denver, Karen and Travis Wanner of East Earl.
Also surviving are 34 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, four sisters and two brothers, June and Edward Weaver of Ephrata, Irene and Carl Weaver of Port Trevorton, Faye Martin of Port Trevorton, Leon and Ada Brubaker of Port Trevorton, Clara and Henry Weaver of Liverpool, Kenneth Brubaker of Reading; a sister-in-law, Karen Brubaker; and a brother-in-law, John Weaver.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sons; one infant grandson; two infant brothers; a brother, Fred Brubaker; and a sister, Marie Weaver.

Womelsdorf - Ryan Kent Brubaker, 24, of Womelsdorf, PA, died Saturday, June 11, 2022. He was the husband of Janita H. Horst Brubaker. He was born in Kenhorst, PA on January 17, 1998, son of Darryl S. and Christine M. Weaver Brubaker of Womelsdorf.
Ryan was employed in the delivery and service department at Countryside Fuel in Myerstown. He was a member of Martin's Mennonite Church of the Weaverland Conference.

Gerald Leroy Brunk, 86, of Harrisonburg, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born March 26, 1936, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Orvin Daniel and Mary Isabelle (Coakley) Brunk.
Gerald was united in marriage on Oct. 25, 1958, to Kathleen Sharon (McMullan) Brunk.
Gerald was founder of Blue Ridge Florist, manager of the Lawn Doctor in Northern Virginia and Maryland, and a Charles Chips representative. He also worked with local car dealerships and retired from Mast and Brunk. He loved NASCAR, hunting, and the Washington Redskins. Gerald enjoyed attending his kids and grandkids sporting events and sharing motorcycle rides with his wife. Over the years he had attended People's Baptist Church and Harrisonburg Mennonite Church.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his daughter, Renee Branner of Bridgewater; daughter-in-law, Lauren Jefferson of Harrisonburg; five grandchildren, Aaron Brunk and wife, Jen Dunn, Adam Brunk and partner, Brittany Greaver, Jarrett Brunk, Jordan Branner and wife, Nessah Branner, and Alicia Branner; a brother, Dale Brunk and wife, Rachel of Harwood, Md.; sister-in-law, Patricia Brunk; former daughter-in-law, Donna Brunk; special son-in-law, Michael Branner; cousin, Betty Jo Eby and husband, Ralph, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sons, Ronald Brunk and Randy Brunk and brother, Don Brunk.

Muriel “Lynn” Brunk, 78, passed away Jan. 1, 2022. She was born in Denbigh, Va., to George F. and Pauline Yoder Brunk. Later in life she moved to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Va.
She is survived by five siblings, George F. Brunk Jr., Irene Huja, Polly Deen, Molly Brunk and Dale Brunk; their spouses; four nephews; a niece and a host of beloved extended family and friends.
She had a warm heart and a sweet smile for everyone. She enjoyed her life to the fullest and was always ready to help others if she could. At the end of her life, always a devoted Christian, she looked forward to joining her parents and other ancestors in Heaven.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life in Harrisonburg at a later date.

He was a member of the Mountain View Mennonite Church. He was the son of the late Martin L. and Ruth H. (Horst) Burkholder, and the husband of Susanna K. (Rudolph) Burkholder.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven sons, Josiah (Rachel) Orleans, MI, Marcus (Alta) Newville, PA, Joel (Delores) Dongola, IL, Ethan (Laura) Twin City, GA, Stephen (Joy) Orleans, MI, Samuel (Esther) and Philip (Sharon) , both of Carlisle, PA; five daughters, Laura and Aletha Burkholder, both of Carlisle, PA, Vera Jane (James) Witmer, Lebanon, PA, Suellen and Edith Burkholder, both of Carlisle, PA, 33 grandchildren; three brothers, John (Marie) Waynesboro, PA, Nathan (Ruth) Sharpsburg, MD, James (Rhoda) Hagerstown, MD; and three sisters, Naomi Martin, Waynesboro, PA; Sarah Burkholder, Greencastle, PA; Elizabeth (Jesse) Petre, Greencastle, PA.

Emma Jane Burkholder, age 82, born in and longtime resident of Rockingham County, Va., passed away peacefully at Sentara RMH Medical Center on Dec. 21 [2022] after a brief illness. Born the second child to the late Irvin N. and Brownie Bowman Burkholder.
She is survived by her seven siblings and spouses: Irvin David (Fotch) and Lois Caplinger Burkholder, Clarence N. and Sharon Holland Burkholder, Boyd B. and Sharon Lam Burkholder, Earl F. and Donna Albrect Burkholder, Lois M. and Robert G. Wenger, Dwight L. and Linda Kiser Burkholder, and Ruel J. and Diane Blosser Burkholder. She is also survived by friend, Jim Mullenex.
Jane lived and embodied her Christian beliefs and values in both her relationships and occupational endeavors. She valued people and enjoyed art, literature and music. After graduation in 1970 from Eastern Mennonite College with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Jane taught elementary classes at Mt. Pleasant Christian School in Chesapeake, Va. for five years. Returning to the Shenandoah Valley, she was employed in various pursuits, including working as a counselor at Rivendale Home, childcare, and other custodial services. The past 10 years she was a valued resident at VMRC and involved in numerous committees and activities.
A longtime member of Weavers Mennonite Church, there will be a memorial service held in her memory at the Shady Oak Fellowship Hall (beside Weavers Church) on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 3:00 p.m. As a last act of giving, Jane donated her body to the Virginia State Anatomical Program for medical research.

Ervin S. Burkholder, 74, of Denver, passed away on June 21, 2022, in his residence.
He was the son of the late William K. and Dorothy Jane (Shaeffer) Burkholder.
He was the loving husband of Anna Ruth (Musser) Burkholder, with whom he married on February 10, 1968, and shared fifty four loving years of marriage.
Ervin was a member of Springville Mennonite Church (Weaverland Conference). He was employed as a farmer and enjoyed hunting.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Nevin M. husband of Miriam (High) Burkholder of Denver, Vernon M. husband of Tanya A. (Griesemer) Burkholder of Ephrata, Janet M. wife of Dale L. Weaver of Stevens, and Judy M. Martin of Denver. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and his siblings: Donald S. husband of Lean Mae Burkholder of Stevens, Grace Ann wife of Irvin Musser of Womelsdorf, Fay wife of Marvin Sauder of Reinholds, and Ruth Wenger of East Earl.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a grandson: Mason W. Weaver, a brother: Glen Burkholder, a brother-in-law: Earl Wenger, and a daughter-in-law: Fay L. Burkholder.

Ezra Wenger Burkholder, 90, of Washington Boro, Pennsylvania, was received into the arms of his Lord and Savior on February 25, 2022. He was the son of John and Mary (Wenger) Burkholder. Ezra was preceded in death by his wife Lois (2016) after 61 years of marriage.
Surviving are his four children: Vera Jane, wife of James W. Kreider, Placentia, California; J. Richard, husband of Cheryl L. (Harnish), Washington Boro; Nancy J., wife of Charles H. Albrecht, Lancaster; Marianne, wife of the late Rodney Dale Beiber, Washington Boro; eight grandchildren: Regina (Tim), Chad (Stacie), Cindy, Tanya (Marcel), Ryan (Lindsey), Jeff (Lisa), Crystal (Ian), and Eric (Marisa); 15 great grandchildren; two brothers, Paul A., Ephrata, Glenn E., Washington Boro; two sisters, Ruth N. Breneman, Manheim, Jean E. Alvisi, Stevens.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Irwin W., J. Clyde, and Raymond W.; one sister, Doris E., and one grandson, Tyler.
Ezra enjoyed gardening and raising crops and cattle on his farm (Abundant Hills) in "the manor." He engineered and fabricated many interesting tools and pieces of equipment to suit his needs on the farm. He was employed part-time for many years by Hershey Equipment Co. He also held part-time jobs at Lancaster Leaf, Turkey Hill, Grinnell, and for Mark Hess.
He was a member of the Mt. Raiders Hunting Camp in Potter Co. where he thoroughly enjoyed the friendship of each of the members and guests. His love of hunting started at an early age and continued throughout his life.
He was a member of Living Light Mennonite Church (formerly Masonville) where he served as trustee and participated in worship by playing his mandolin.
Ezra enjoyed sharing the good news of Jesus through his mandolin music along with various groups: The Howard Simmons Orchestra, Melody Strings, The Old Timers, and The Five Friends. Ezra encouraged many of his family and friends through his music, inspiring them to pursue their interests in music.
Ezra impacted many lives throughout his life. Many family members and neighbors were employed with summer work on the farm. On the farm, life lessons were taught: enjoying hard work, working together with excellence and efficiency, encouraging others, and making time to play and vacation.
He will be remembered for his lively story-telling, living simply, and desiring to live at peace with all. He offered his encouragement, words of wisdom, and resources to others, helping them find and develop their God-given passions, gifting and calling.
The family would like to thank Marianne for the special care she gave to Dad in the last years of his life.

Gladys Hershey Burkholder, 89, of New Holland and formerly of Denver, passed away Tuesday March 29th, 2022 at Garden Spot Village in New Holland. She was preceded in death by her husband Landis Eugene Burkholder in 2020 and was the daughter of the late Amos G. and Edna Groff Hershey.
Gladys is survived by: two sons, David A. Burkholder of New Holland and John H. Burkholder, husband of Gwen S. Burkholder of Columbia; a daughter, Joyce E. Martin of Coatesville; six grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene G. and Thelma E. Hershey both of Landis Homes in Lititz. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Dorothy R. Felpel and Pauline M. Hershey.
Gladys worked in the cafeteria for Cocalico School District for many years and worked part time at Weaver's Market after retirement. Gladys and Landis operated a small farm in Denver most of their life, which is now called "Burkholder's Ever-Green Farm" and is owned and operated by his brother Dan and his wife Margi.
Gladys was a member of Stumptown Mennonite Church for many years and enjoyed time with her friends in Sewing Circle and Sunday School class.
A viewing will be held at Stumptown Mennonite Church on Saturday April 2nd at 10 AM followed by a funeral service and burial at 11 AM.

Burkholder, James Rex
January 3, 1941 - August 30, 2022
James Rex Burkholder passed away August 30 at his home; due to complications related to a disabling accident in 1995. He was born January 3, 1941, at Goshen City Hospital, the son of Clayton and Mildred Burkholder. Jim attended West Goshen Elementary, Dell and Kurtz schools. In 1959 he graduated from Wakarusa High School.
On November 2, 1963, he married Jeraldine (Jeri) Hoffman at Eighth Street Mennonite Church. Following their marriage, Jim served for two years at the Fort Wayne Children’s Home, a juvenile detention facility for troubled youth. After returning to Goshen, he was employed in construction. Nevertheless, Jim’s lifelong interest in livestock farming persisted, specializing in handling sheep and an unwavering fascination with bison.
Jim got great joy from building his family’s country home. He looked forward to family vacations in state and national parks. A highlight of his life was spending time with his grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife Jeri, his son Tyler, his grandchildren Sydney Burkholder Nason, Marah, Bailey and Brody Burkholder, a great grandson Ivan Nason, and two brothers, Robert and Milton Burkholder. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Slade in 2006.
Jim was a long-time member of North Goshen Mennonite Church. He assumed various responsibilities as a member, but he most enjoyed his work sponsoring the youth groups.

Burkholder, Olin Atlee
December 7, 1967 - October 5, 2022
Olin Atlee Burkholder, 54, of Waynesboro, Va., passed away peacefully Oct. 5, [2022] at the home of his sister, Janet, who cared for him in recent years.
Olin was born in Rockingham County on Dec. 7, 1967. He was the son of the late Earl Burkholder and Martha (Rodes) Burkholder, who survives. Olin was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dale Allen Burkholder (wife, Karen, who survives), Wayne Edward Burkholder and Galen Leon Burkholder; a niece, Carolina Star Burkholder; and a brother-in law, Ed Fleming. Besides his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Janet Fleming of Waynesboro and Eva (Keith) Crider of Strasburg; 14 nieces and nephews and 24 great-nieces and nephews.
Olin was a resident at Faith Mission Home from October 1975 to June 1982. Until 2007 he attended Bethany Mennonite Church with his parents. Although Olin could not sing, he loved music and spent many hours listening to hymns and Gospel music.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 16, at Bank Mennonite Church at 2:30 p.m.
Burkholder, Tammy S. Pannebecker
September 25, 1963 - April 3, 2022
Tammy S. Burkholder, 58, of Ephrata, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2022, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. She had suffered with Multiple System Atrophy a rare and aggressive version of Parkinsonism that immobilized her for the last couple of few years.
She was born in Ephrata to Harry L. and Barbara A. (Beyerle) Pannebecker, of Reinholds, and was the wife of Delmar Burkholder with whom she shared 38 years of marriage.
She was associated with Hinkletown Church.
Tammy worked for Doneckers and QVC for most of her life. She was a graduate of Cocalico High School and Brownstown Vo-tech. She was compassionate and always had an open ear of listening. Tammy was an animal lover, especially cats and tigers. She also enjoyed buying and selling ventriloquist goods with her husband.
She was preceded in death by a stillborn brother.
Services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Buschert, Joy Martin
May 21, 1927 - September 14, 2022
Joy Martin Buschert died on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at the age of 95.
Joy was born on May 21, 1927 to Josiah and Mary Ann (Shantz) Martin who lived on a farm outside of Kitchener, ON Canada. She was the youngest of five children spread over 14 years. She attended the Natchez one-room country school several miles away. Joy was a singer in women’s groups and did well in studies in High School where she was proficient enough at short-hand that she was tasked with teaching it to the younger students.
Joy attended Goshen College for one year and then worked as a secretary in various businesses in Kitchener and Goshen. She married Robert Buschert in 1948 and a year later they moved to Lafayette where in 1953 the twins Allen and Russell were born. They moved briefly to New Jersey where John was born in 1958 and then they returned to Lafayette where Bob began a teaching career. In 1965 they moved to Goshen and joined the Goshen College community as Bob joined the faculty.
Together with Bob, Joy was a gracious host to many students, faculty, friends and family over the years. Having people gathered around the dining room table at their house on Fifth street to enjoy a delicious meal cooked by Joy was a common occurrence. They also made many trips to northern Italy where she enjoyed hiking, learning Italian and connecting with the local people.
Her interests included drawing, painting, batik, learning Italian and German languages, cooking, singing, hiking, cross-country skiing, and picture framing. But caring for plants was perhaps finally her greatest joy. As a member of Assembly Mennonite Church, Joy put in many hours with the hospitality committee and taking care of the outside plants. She also volunteered for The Window for many years and served on its Board.
Joy is survived by three children, Allen (Mayuri Onerheim) of Mountain View, Arkansas, Russell (Janet) of Boise, Idaho, and John (Lyn) of Goshen, three grandchildren, Elizabeth (Guilhem Ribeill) of Boston, Massachusetts, Andrew, Rochester of New York, and Daniel of Goshen, and one great grandchild Julien Ribeill. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Buschert, and four siblings, Olive (Wayne) Snyder, Raymon (Margaret) Martin, Harold (Eileen) Martin, Eldon (Elaine) Martin.
Interment will be at Violett cemetery in a private ceremony. A memorial service will be Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Assembly Mennonite Church. Visitation will be from 1-3 pm with the service starting at 4 pm and a meal following.

Byler, Anna S. Chupp
March 17, 1923 - July 17 2022
Anna S. Byler, age 99 of Nappanee, IN, died at 2:30 pm on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at her residence. Mrs. Byler was born in Nappanee on March 17, 1923 to Samuel and Amanda (Borkholder) Chupp. On March 27, 1947 Anna married Elmer J. Byler in Nappanee. He preceded her in death on July 13. 2012. Mrs. Byler was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
She is survived by her 4 daughters: Marietta (Ray) Couch of Yacolt, WA, Ruth (Crist) Helmuth of Penrose, CO, Barbara (Paul) Troyer of Bourbon, IN, and Nora (Duane) Miller of Nappanee; 15 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Elizabeth Miller of Goshen, IN and Barbara Burkholder of Nappanee; 2 sisters-in-law, Esther Chupp of Wakarusa, IN and Mary Chupp of Etna Green, IN; and a lifelong friend, Alma Stutzman of Nappanee.
Mrs. Byler was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 grandsons, Kent and Todd Helmuth; 1 granddaughter Caralee Troyer; 7 brothers: Eli, Joe, Emanuel, John, Harvey, Jacob, and Levi Chupp; and 5 sisters: Mattie Hershberger, Lydiann Chupp, Katie Burkholder, Verna Bontrager, and Amanda Chupp.
The family would like to thank Tiffany and the Center for Hospice Care for their loving care of Anna.
Friends and family may call after 10 am on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at the Duane Miller residence (9625 Hepton Road, Nappanee, IN 46550). Funeral services will be held at 9:30 am on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, also at the Duane Miller residence. February 19, 1943 - January 31, 2022
Caroline H. Byler, 78, of Goshen, died at 5:30 pm on Monday, January 31, at her residence. She was born on February 19, 1943 in Monroe to Noah and Mary (Schwartz) Schwartz. On August 28, 1969 in Middlebury, she married Noah B. Byler, he died February 7, 2019.
Surviving are four daughters, Lorene (Floyd) Schrock of Goshen, Marilyn Byler of Goshen, Katherine Byler of Goshen, Christina (Enos) Miller of Shipshewana; son, Daniel (Loretta) Byler of Goshen; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Emma Schrock of Goshen, Elizabeth (Larry) Miller of Millersburg, Edith (Eli) Miller of Nappanee; three sisters-in-law, Lydiann Schwartz of Kingston, WI, Anna Schwartz of Middlebury, Margaret Schwartz of LaGrange; brother-in-law, Merv Yoder of Shipshewana. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, John, Albert, Levi and Amos Schwartz; three sisters, Rosina Miller, Catherine Byler and Margaret Yoder.
Caroline was a homemaker and member of the Old Order Amish Church.
Visitation will be after 1:00 pm on Wednesday, February 2, and all day Thursday, February 3, at the family's residence, 60880 State Rd. 13 Goshen. Funeral services will be at 9:30 am on Friday, February 4, at Jonathan Yoder residence, 60845 State Rd. 13 Goshen. Services will be conducted by Bishop John Stoltzfus and the home ministers. Burial will be in Thomas Cemetery, Goshen. Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury is in charge of arrangements.
Byler, Jonathan R. "Jon"
October 15, 1954 - October 9, 2022
Jonathan "Jon" R. Byler, 67, of Goshen, lost his fight with Multiple Myeloma and AL Amyloidosis on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at IU Hospital, Indianapolis, surrounded by his wife and children.
He was born October 15, 1954, in Belleville, Pennsylvania, to Bennett and Lena (Hartzler) Byler.
His surviving siblings are Urbane (Janet) Byler of Goshen, James (Marie) Byler of Belleville, Pennsylvania, Jason (Tillie) Byler of Hesston, Kansas, Ruby (Russ) Freed of East Lansing, Michigan, Chipper Culler of Lyndhurst, Virginia and Sue (Blake) Byler Ortman of Comer, Georgia.
Jon graduated from Eastern Mennonite College in 1976. He owned Cornerstone Carpenters, Inc.
He married Sherrie Thompson in May 1989 at Tri Lakes Community Church, Bristol.
She survives along with two sons, Joel (Katie) Byler of West Lafayette and Jarah Byler of Goshen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Calvin.
A member of Pleasant View Church, Jon loved his family and had a great sense of humor.
He was an avid Penn State football fan and he enjoyed hobby farming and flower gardening.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, October 14, at Pleasant View Church, 58529 C.R. 23, Goshen. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, October 14, 2022, at the church. Retired Pastor Dale Stoll will officiate.
Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery at a later date.

Byler, Rudy R.
February 9, 1943 - March 26, 2022
Rudy R. Byler, 79, of 1775 County Road 200, Dundee, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at his home following a 2 year battle with cancer.
He was born in Hartville on February 9, 1943 to the late John Freeman and Mary (Yoder) Byler and married Sarah Yoder on January 16, 1962. She died on October 2, 2020.
He had worked for Kidron Body for many years and was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
He is survived by children, Amos (Anna) Byler of Apple Creek, Daniel (Fannie) Byler of Fredericksburg, Junior (Anna) Byler of Dundee, Elmina (Daniel) Hershberger of Millersburg, Freeman (Iva) Byler of Millersburg and Mary Ann (Marion) Miller of the home; a brother, Lavern (Sylvia) Byler of Pennsylvania; 3 sisters, Catherine Burkholder of Indiana, Susie Yoder of Hartville, and Esther Bease of Massillon; a sister-in-law, Miriam (Alfred) Raber; 24 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Byler; infant sister, Sarah; brothers-in-law, Dan B. Yoder and Jake Burkholder; grandchildren, Allen and Laura Byler.
The family would like to thank Aultman Hospice and caretaker Katie (Melvin) Mast for their kind and compassionate care.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 28, 2022 at 9:00 am at the family residence with Bishop Joe Miller Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Keim Cemetery, Paint Township, Holmes County. Friends may call after 2 pm Saturday or anytime Sunday at the family home. Spidell Funeral Home in Mount Eaton is handling the arrangements.
Byler, Urbane
October 6, 1939 - December 9, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Urbane Byler, 83 of Goshen, Indiana. He died peacefully on December 9, 2022 at Goshen Hospital from complications of Parkinson’s disease.
Urbane, born on October 6, 1939, was the oldest of eight children born to the late Bennett and Lena (Hartzler) Byler.
Urbane and Janet (Smucker) married on June 27, 1962, and enjoyed 60 years together. They founded and directed Hill Street Children’s Center, in Slatington, Pennsylvania for more than 25 years. They volunteered with Mennonite Central Committee in Honduras and Mexico and with Jubilee Partners in Comer, Georgia. Their home was a landing place for refugees from Central America, Rwanda, Croatia and Burma, along with exchange students, family and friends, and many others who needed a place to stay.
Before his retirement and moving to Goshen, Urbane and Janet were well-known in the Lehigh Valley area (Slatington, PA) for the October pumpkin festival at Byler’s Farm. Thousands of children and families enjoyed the educational field trips where they could squeeze milk from a real cow, gather eggs from the henhouse, slide down a haystack slide, and ride to the pumpkin patch to choose a pumpkin to take home.
Urbane was known for creative ideas, commitment to peace and justice, and a great sense of humor. He served on the board of directors of both the Lehigh Carbon Community College and the Northern Lehigh School District. He was actively involved at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Slatington, PA, Whitehall Mennonite Church in Egypt, PA, and Benton Mennonite Church in Goshen, IN.
Survivors include his wife Janet (Smucker), four children: Kevin (Julie Howell) of Southbury, CT; Curtis (Karen) of Easton, PA; Jason (Janine) of Kalamazoo, MI; and Casandra (Tom Stinson) of Millersburg, IN along with seven grandchildren: Zachary, Amy, Isaac, Zaquavia and Varselli Byler, Susana and Alfie Stinson; six siblings: Jason (Tillie) of Hesston, KS; Ruby (Russel) Freed of East Lansing, MI, James (Marie) of Belleville, PA; Esther Cullen of Lyndhurst, VA; Susan (Blake) Byler Ortman of Comer, GA and sister-in-law Sherrie Byler of Goshen, IN. He was preceded in death by brothers Jonathan (Sherrie) on October 9, 2022 and Calvin in 1952.
